Master of Arts in Sustainable Design

research, work, and writing on sustainable design

A sustainable designer’s role is to look at systems, products, and methods and to work to create more efficient, circular, and resilient means to an end. Often this is through an upstream approach using systems thinking or biomimetic design in combination with data to reevaluate how the desired function can be achieved. Or by determining the negative feedback loop or tipping point that needs just a little tweaking to have a new transformational desired outcome.

Be it behavior change through messaging designed to change a habit or choice or looking at how to get a product to a consumer via less impactful means my goal as a sustainable designer is to do more with less and to have people embrace that less is more!

Thesis

This thesis explores the development of diversified economic income streams for small-scale fishing communities, through small-scale seaweed permaculture livelihoods, knowledge sharing of the importance of turtles for ecosystem health, and community-led behavior change. Reducing the dependence of the communities on fishing could decrease the amount of gill net use overall and thereby the impacts of by-catch of sea turtles.
